“It was awful,” Bassett says after four-run loss

Toronto Blue Jays starter Chris Bassitt expressed his disappointment with his performance.

“I felt good, but I pitched horribly,” Bassitt said after the Blue Jays’ 2-5 home loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, on Saturday.

Bassitt was charged with four runs on seven hits, two homers, two walks and five strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings. Five of the seven hits went for extra bases. He gave up a solo homer to Bo Naylor in the third inning, a two-run shot to Ramon Laureano in the fourth and a two-run double in the sixth.

He said, “The goal was to make the other hitters uncomfortable. I didn’t want to give up any walks,” he said of his approach to the game. With the exception of a leadoff walk in the fifth inning, he was successful in limiting the walks but was unable to avoid the long ball.

“It was good,” manager John Schneider said of Bassett’s performance. “The home run to Naylor was not a hard-hit pitch. Laureano’s home run was expected. He made some good pitches, but he made some mistakes and gave up some long balls. Overall, it was good.”

Bassett has been especially vulnerable against lefties this season. Prior to today’s game, he had a 0.272 OPS and 0.888 FIP against lefties, which was worse than his performance against righties (0.201/0.556). He did a decent job against lefties today, except for the home run to Naylor, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the damage.

When asked about Bassitt’s struggles against lefties, Schneider said, “I think it’s more of a matter of just sticking to the plan than it is a matter of a specific pitch,” and chalked it up to simple execution.

In his nine seasons in the major leagues, Bassitt made the postseason with Oakland in 2020 and the Mets in 2022. He understands the pressure of a postseason run.바카라사이트

When asked how he handles the tight race, he said simply, “I just worry about tomorrow. That’s it,” he said simply.

“We have guys in our locker room that can do it. A lot of teams struggle in the postseason because they don’t have the players who can do it. We have those players,” he said, expressing his faith in his teammates.
