“He could become a starting powerhouse.” Ryu Hyun-jin is expected to renew his contract with Toronto… Why did this analysis come out
Ryu Hyun-jin, 36, could re-sign with the Toronto Blue Jays, according to a local analysis.
On June 6 (ET), Fansided analyzed Toronto’s offseason starting rotation and Ryu’s name came up.
Marcus Stroman is the centerpiece of the rotation. Stroman rejected a $21 million contract to become a free agent.
In 27 games (25 starts) this season, he went 10-9 with a 3.95 ERA. Despite his strong start to the season, he was hampered by frequent injuries.레모나토토 주소
Stroman was previously linked to Toronto. The Jays tried to acquire Stroman in a trade last July, but the deal fell through after nothing concrete was discussed.
The season ended. Stroman is now eligible for free agency, and it looks like Toronto is salivating again.
“Ultimately eliminated from fall ball, the Cubs’ decision not to flesh out a trade may have been a missed opportunity,” the outlet wrote, noting that Stroman “could be an important piece for Toronto in the offseason.”
Coming off a wild-card run with the Minnesota Twins that saw their offense struggle, Toronto could still be looking to bolster its starting rotation, according to the outlet.
That’s where Ryu’s name came up. Instead of signing Stroman, the Jays could re-sign Hyun-Jin Ryu.
“Toronto has a solid starting rotation with Ryu as the only free agent pitcher. Ryu has a 3.46 ERA in 11 starts,” adding, “Ryu could be a target for a new contract instead of Stroman.”
Age is the biggest drawback for Ryu, who will turn 37 next year. However, he returned from Tommy John surgery and showed his knife-like command and velocity. There are local analysts who think he’s good enough to be a fifth starter. The Houston Astros, Atlanta Braves, Arizona Diamondbacks, Tampa Bay Rays, and other teams have all been linked to Ryu.
Toronto had plenty of starting pitching options this year. They have Chris Bassitt, Jose Berrios, Kevin Gausman, and Yusei Kikuchi. And Alec Manoa will be joining them.
Of course, one option would be to sign both players. “Re-signing Hyun-jin Ryu and adding Stroman could create a starting powerhouse, with some starters transitioning to the bullpen,” the outlet said.
